All you need to know about Flame retardant additives and Anti Dripping Agents

Flame retardants are chemical compounds designed to provide passive fire protection to flammable materials under specific fire risks. The fire protection provided by these chemicals can vary from ignition resistance to slowing of flame spread, reduction in smoke and toxic gas. Fire retardant additives are compounds incorporated into polymeric materials during the manufacturing process and have the potential to perform a wide range of safety measures if chosen and implemented properly.

No Universal Flame Retardant

It is important to remember that every fire retardant solution is customized for a specific polymer and to withstand a specific resistance test. There is no universal retardant! Each fire retardant compound has different physical, chemical and toxicological properties, this means no two chemicals are exactly the same and are not universally interchangeable for example, Flame retardant additives for polypropylene is different from those for polyethylene, polystyrene and other types of polymers. Furthermore, a material that works well with a polymer in one specific test scenario may not be appropriate for the same polymer in another test or for different types of polymers in that same test.

Categories of Flame retardants

Generally, Flame retardants are categorized into three types- Gas-phase flame retardant, Endothermic and Char forming. Let’s discuss them in brief.

      Gas-Phase Flame Retardants

This type of retardant reduces heat in the gas phase by scavenging reactive free radicals, thus inhibiting further combustion of the material. For example Halogen. Phosphorus.

     Endothermic Flame Retardants

By releasing non-flammable gases like H2O, CO2, this type of retardant dilutes the fuel and cools the polymer. They operate in the gas phase and condensed phase. For example, Metal Hydroxides, Carbonates.

     Char Forming Flame Retardants

Operates in condensed phase and prevents fuel release and provides thermal insulation for the underlying polymeric material. For example Intumescents, Nanocomposites.
